Prop. B authorizes the creation of a San Francisco Public Bank

The Standard’s voter guide says a public bank has wound through City Hall for decades, almost the entire Board wants to charter one, and funding it is a different matter.

The San Francisco Standard’s 2026 voter guide includes a page on Proposition B, the supervisors-referred charter amendment to authorize a San Francisco public bank.

The guide’s summary is the sequence problem. Chartering the bank has support from almost the entire Board of Supervisors. Paying for it does not come with this measure. The Controller still prices the corporation and bank at $310 million to $460 million over eight years, and Prop B appropriates nothing.

A nonpartisan explainer can say funding is a separate question and still land on the official No case: do not lock an unfunded institution into the Charter.
